Blog 13
What if I had a topic to write about? Maybe I wouldn’t be writing about nothing, but it looks like that is what is going to happen today. I meant to get more blogs done before now, but my procrastination along with studying for other things got the best of me once again. Overall though, I think I did much better this semester about doing my work before the last second.
In the past, I have waited until the night before it was due to start any assignment, regardless of length or complexity. Now I start at best a few days before it is time to turn it in. I think that is a pretty good improvement myself. I still want to do better though. I feel like my work could be of much higher quality if I utilized all of my allotted time instead of just the last little bit of it. I also think that I would be much less stressed overall, because I would not be constantly worrying about when my next assignment is due. If I started working on it right away, I could finish it in plenty of time, and probably get even better grades!
Hopefully, I will keep progressing towards this goal. Maybe someday I will reach it and be a much better learner because of it. Another area I still need to improve on is studying. I have a Biology test in a few hours that I haven’t studied for quite enough. Hopefully, my next few hours will be very enlightening and get me a good grade in that class. A “B” is still in sight for that class, and I desperately need A’s and B’s. Anyways, I guess that’s about it! I hope everyone has a great summer!

Blog 12, What if?
I think the eyes would probably be the biggest difference. If humans had evolved to be nocturnal, out eyes would probably be much bigger to take in more light. This would help us be able to function the same at night as we do during the day now. Our eyes would have probably evolved to the point where we would be able to see as well as any nocturnal animal. On the other hand, our eyes would be of very little use during the day. Similar to how we must use lights at night, we would probably have to wear veils over our eyes so that the sun wouldn’t blind us.
Another thing that would probably be different is our skin. Since we wouldn’t be in the sun as often, it would probably be much lighter. On the other hand, the dark skin trait might have still occurred due to it being able to blend into the night. I can’t really say which would be dominant, but it would be one way or the other. It could even be a combination of both.
Of course, none of this really matters, because it didn’t happen, but I think it is still a cool concept. I like to think about alternate realities and stuff like this. We may have even had a nocturnal ancestor at some point, but he didn’t make it to the current day. Either way, I really like this idea!
Blog 11, What if?
The article made an interesting point about the changes made to the marijuana plant through unnatural selection. If the street breeders were able to amplify a desirable effect in marijuana, then why can’t undesirable traits be bred out of other plants. For example, why can’t a coca farmer breed a coca plant from which less harmful cocaine could be made? Without the harmful effects to the brain, what is there to keep cocaine illegal? Another example, why can’t opium growers breed a less addictive opiate? This could launch a whole new generation of pain meds without the high risk of addiction. It could start a medical revolution. While I don’t ever see cocaine being made legal, this is still an interesting concept. The power of evolution quickened and changed through unnatural selection could dramatically change our drug market in the near future.
I don’t actually know the plausibility of any of the ideas in the above paragraph, and the article only mentioned these as open-ended closing thoughts. I do, however have some knowledge in the field of evolution and natural selection. Maybe someday these ideas will be a reality. Humans have been breeding traits in and out of plants for years. If enough studying is put into these things, who knows what could happen?
In conclusion, carelessness created by illicit activity has likely made marijuana more dangerous. Scientists are trying to confirm that the unbalancing of THC and CBD is truly the culprit. They are also trying to change the plant to make it less dangerous. If the scientists accomplish this, it could likely cause a big movement towards decriminalization. That will surely impact society in a large way.
Blog 10, What if?
This has lead to many other scientist researching other, more balanced specimens of marijuana. They want to determine if a more balanced plant is less dangerous. The general idea is that the THC-CBD balanced pot will not have the psychosis inducing effects of the street stuff. If this is true, one of the biggest arguments against the decriminalization of marijuana will be thrown out the window.
This discovery very well could progress marijuana towards decimalization in the United States. While I don’t feel very strongly in either direction about it, I know people who share both views. As a teenager, I probably don’t have to tell you that I know people who smoke it, and I probably also don’t have to tell you how they feel about it. On the other hand, I know people who are completely against marijuana use. My dad is a good example of this. He has always held the common view that marijuana is a ‘gateway drug.’ This term means that it makes a user more likely to experiment with other, heavier drugs, such as cocaine, heroine, and methamphetamine. While I don’t know the scientific data behind it, from my personal observations, this may not be true. Most of the people that I have seen smoke pot don’t do anything. Also, please notice that the article I read didn’t address this issue, but I thought that my personal opinion and incite was worth including. (Continued in Blog 11).
Blog 9, What If?
The legality of the usage of marijuana in the United States is becoming a hot topic. Many people, including several doctors, want it legalized for medicinal use. This is mostly because of it’s effects on cancer patients; the THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana allows them to cope with the pain and keep food down. Others want it legalized for recreational use, for obvious reasons. While other still want it kept illegal completely. A recent study may help to tip the scale one way or the other.
Studies have shown that marijuana use affects some people’s mental health later in life; it has been shown to lead to schizophrenia. This is only seen in a small number of people, but it is still a big deal. This psychosis inductive property is often misconstrued and used by anti-pot groups as propaganda for keeping it illegal. Amanda Feilding at Oxford's Beckley Foundation and Paul Morrison at London's Institute of Psychiatry did some experiments to try to find the cause of this mental change. They did numerous experiments on street grade pot and made an interesting discovery.
Since it was made illegal, marijuana has been sold on the streets. Since it has been sold on the streets, it has been bred for potency of THC. From this stems the problem. When the potency of THC went up, the concentration of cannabidol(CBD) went down. The CBD acted as a balance for many of THC’s psychoactive effects. This means that the street breeders not only made it stronger but also more dangerous. They seem to have upset a balance inside of the plant though unnatural selection. (continued on Blog 10)

What if; English Blog 8
What if there had never been organized education of any sort? I think the world would definitely be a different place. The human race would be nothing like it is today. Our population would be nothing like it is today, and none of our technologies would exist. I would not want to live in that world.
If the human race had never started formal education, it would still be living in small villages, if that. Any innovation ever was spread by education. For example, if the idea of harnessing fire had never been spread, a wide majority of our technologies wouldn’t have ever been needed. Life as we know it would not exist. Without the spreading of ideas, the human race might not exist at all. We could have failed as a species and been whipped out all together.
Opposite from the impact on us, the Earth would probably be much better off. Without human technologies, everything would still be all natural. None of the forests would have been cleared, and many extinct animal species would likely still be around. If you buy into the whole “we cause Global Warming” deal, then that wouldn’t be happening either. It is sad to say, but I am sure that Earth would be much better off if we didn’t exist or were completely uneducated. Anything good that we do for the Earth if only undoing bad things that we already did.
I am not trying to badmouth the human race. I am part of it and do a great deal of the damage myself. I am just looking at it from my personal point of view. I am really glad that we do have education, and have discovered or invented all of the things that we have. I would not want to be part of a uneducated human race.

English 1020 Blog 7; What if?
I don’t think my family’s lives would be the same any, now that I think about it. If my parents had never had me, they may not even be together at all. This would mean that my younger brother and sister would have never been born. This would influence the lives of all three of our friends. My friends would probably be much worse off without the good influence of me. I am sure all of my brother’s and sister’s friends would be different too. All of the people’s lives that we are in contact with every day would be different.
Aside from affecting people locally, I don’t think me not being born would have that big of an impact on the world. I don’t think that at this point in my life I have done enough to make any big difference, and I am okay with that. I am just happy that I would make a difference in the lives of my family. Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter to me.
English 1020 Blog 6; What if?
If I could time travel I would change several events in history. The first would be Hitler. I would kill him at birth. I could save countless lives and probably avoid World War II, at least as we knew it, all together. There would likely be drastic changes to the world as we know it. If World War II was avoided, who knows what life everywhere would be like. The invention of the atomic bombs would likely be delayed several years without the help of the captured German scientists. If Japan was still going super imperial, they would likely have caused a long drawn out war without the atom bombs to stop them.
Aside from changing events, I would go meet several people. First off I would go meet the Founding Fathers of our country. Next I would go meet Einstein and several other famous smart people. I think it would be a really enriching experience to meet all of these people. I could dramatically alter the course of history by giving them some of their ideas earlier that they would have discovered them on their own, or I could even take the ideas back and take credit for myself. I could become super famous by someone else’s work, but I wouldn’t do that because it just isn’t right. Anyways, none of this really matters because time travel is not real.

English 1020, Blog 5; Maybe
I don’t have to tell many of you this, but since many people were caught with incorrectly cited or uncited work on their part ones, we were assigned some annotated bibliographies to do over spring break. That was all fine and well until I realized formidable of a task that actually was. Up to this point, I have 23 sources between my part 1 and part 2. This is going to take forever to finish all of these. On top of that, I am following the instructions I was given for them, but I am not sure if I am doing it right or not.
I also realized, today, that the Periodic Table reflection is due on Tuesday also. I thought I had more time than that, from what I gathered in class last Tuesday. I just cannot get into this book. It keeps talking about some family trees, and that stuff bores me to death. I guess I am going to have to do my best and try to get it done.
In addition to all of this, I have not gotten to ANY outside events yet. They all seem to fall on times when I have class. I would have done the hiking one on the weekends, but I have a bad hip (see last blog post for more information). I will get the results of my MRI on Monday. I hope the doctors figured something out.

English 1020 Blog 4 What if?
A cool super power to have would be flight! I mean like Superman flight. I would just fly to class faster than a speeding bullet. I could fly all over the world and visit all of the far away places that I will never get to go to in real life. Another power similar to flight would be teleportation. I think if I could pick between the two, I would pick teleportation, because it would be instantaneous. I could wait until the absolute last second to leave, which I do anyways. The difference is I wouldn’t be late!
Another cool super power I would like to have would be invisibility. I could get away with so many awesome things if I could go invisible. It would be like Harry Potter’s cloak, but I could just activate it with my mind. If I have invisibility, I would also like to have intangibility. This would make me almost like a ghost. I could do pretty much anything I wanted if I had these powers.
Another useful super power would be common sense. If I had common sense I could make rational everyday decisions and not look like a complete idiot. I could actually function as a normal human being! How amazing would that be? Out of all of the super powers I have mentioned, I think this is the rarest and most powerful. This last bit is obviously a joke, but I think it gets a message across.
1020 Blog 3- Healthcare
The first problem I have encountered with it recently actually involves my mom. She was been and still is having stomach pains to the point that she went to the ER for it. The problem with this is that she doesn’t have health insurance, so all of the cost is on us. . . Anyways, she gets into the ER and they decide that her appendix needs to be removed. So, my mom goes into surgery and gets her appendix removed. After this the doctor tells her that her appendix really didn’t need to be removed, and she will probably still, and does, have the same stomach pains. So now we are stuck with a needless medical bill that bill collectors have already started to harass us over, and my mom is not any better. In my opinion this is a complete failure. . .
The other encounter with this is more personal in a way. I hurt my hip last August. I won’t go into the details of it, but I have been to the doctor twice and the ER once for it now. I have been X-rayed twice and had my hip poked and prodded on numerous times. Through all of this, I have received no relief or valid diagnosis. I am scheduled for a MRI soon, but my point is I have been in pain for about 6 months now, and all anyone wanted to give me was Ibuprofen. If you have ever tried to take a large dose of Ibuprofen, you know not only will it not stop pain from a serious injury, it will tear your stomach up. Until today, Ibuprofen was all I got. I now have some Tramadol, which provides me with some relief, but I won’t even go through the hoops I had to jump through and the bureaucracy that I had to get involved in to get even that.

English 1020, What if?
What would the world be like if the computer had never been invented? I think that things would be completely different in some aspects and places. As a largely technophilic nation, the United States would be nothing like it is today. Students wouldn’t spend all night on Facebook and do bad in class the next day because of it, corporate fat cats couldn’t keep track of all of their investments and companies online, and even our modes of transportation would be different; most methods of transportation use some derivation of a computer to operate. The real question here is, would the positive changes outweigh the negative ones? Many values are corrupted by computers. Loads of crimes take place over the internet. Many people spend all day doing nothing on the computer or playing video games (I have been guilty of these last two myself), when they could be out doing something productive. Despite all of these negative things, computers have many irreplaceable benefits to our lives. So much of our daily lives are ‘powered’ by computers. When you woke up this morning, you took a shower, I hope, and used products that were produced in a factory that was undoubtedly run by a computer. As mentioned before, when you got in your car, you used a computer based product. Even as you read this right now, you are using a computer; even if it was printed, it is still from a computer based product! I really feel like computers are a very good thing. Life would probably be a really sad thing without them. I think everyone would feel the difference to some degree. Unless you are from some obscure culture, I suppose. In conclusion, I will just say that I would not want to live in a world without computers.
